Been screwing around with my new phone today and I’ve found a usb tether method that works on linux (or windows if your ssh client supports dynamic ports) using a socks 4 or 5 proxy (I’m sure there are better ways to do this but this is what I’ve done so far and it’s fast as fuck(at least compared to my experience with PDA net).

[Seems to work without root, need someone who actually doesn’t have root to test it]

First, be able to use adb with your device, figure it out, not my place, and install a ssh server on your phone(I used SSHDroid) configure it however you like, setting the port to 2222

Now run
./adb forward tcp:5000 tcp:2222
to bind local port 5000 to port 2222 on the device

Now connect to the ssh server with
ssh -D 5001 -p 5000 root@localhost
-D is the dynamic port switch, it allows you to connect through(in this case) port 5001 to a socks 4 or 5 proxy through the ssh server.
-p is the port we are connecting to
note if you don’t use SSHDroid the username(root) might be different, hell it might be different for whatever fucking reason, I really have no idea, I’m writing this without giving it superuser and it still says root but whatever.
[I need someone with a more stable connection to test the -C flag (compression) and see if it has any effect, good or bad]

Next, connect to the internet through localhost on port 5001, on firefox make sure to go into about:flags and set
network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true

start chrome/chromium with
—proxy-server=”socks5://localhost:5001”

For applications that do not support SOCKS proxies see: http://blog.kagesenshi.org/2006/12/using-tsocks-to-tranparently-use-socks.html decided to start segfaulting, if anyone can find something similar with dns support that would be awesome
